Suddenly I am getting an exception in jquery-3.4.1.min.js:
SyntaxError: Element.querySelectorAll: '*,:x' is not a valid selector
Any ideas?

I found some info that probably relates to this matter. It seems that jQuery uses exceptions to test the environment in which it is running.
To get rid of unwanted stops in website loading, you need to unselect "Pause on exceptions" in your debugger.
